Tips for viewing property in Morocco

Morocco is a popular destination with Brits looking to invest in property abroad, as well as to move abroad whether for retirement, work or simply a new life. No matter how excited you are about moving to Morocco, however, you should always view a property before you buy it – never buy blind. Sadly, many people do that and end up with a property which is in need of work, repair, or doesn’t quite fit their needs. It couldn’t be more important than when you are buying in a foreign country where legal proceedings and the way things are done can be very different to what you are used to in the UK.

Morocco is only a few hours flight away so if you can, arrange to take a few days out there and use that time to look at properties. Perhaps use the internet to find particular ones you want to view and arrange the viewings from the UK so that you are not wasting time doing so when you get there. Try to see maybe 3 or 4 properties each day and take your time looking around them, inspecting the inside and outside as well as the surrounding area. And don’t be afraid to ask the same questions as you would if you were buying a property in the UK. Saying that, stick to your guns and never allow yourself to be pushed into something by an agent or the seller. Try not to get over-excited and forget the reasons you went there.

The area surrounding the Moroccan property is just as important as the property itself as this is (potentially) where you will be living. Check how close the police stations and hospitals are; are they easy to reach from the property? Also are there many shops nearby and a pharmacy, or would it be a drive to the nearest town to get necessities? If you are taking children with you then try to check out the schools whilst you are there too.

If you are anticipating working in Morocco then it may be a good idea to have a look at local jobs and try to find out how easily you could obtain a job once you are there. Many people use expat forums online to find information from people who have already been through the process of moving to Morocco and they are usually very upfront about how they found things.

Most importantly, have fun looking at properties and see as many as you can, perhaps 3 or 4 per day. Don’t be afraid to look at properties that you may not usually view, properties abroad differ greatly from the UK, and you might find that something which is not your ‘usual type’ or ‘ideal’ home is the perfect place for you.
