Christmas in Morocco

Being predominantly an Islamic nation, Christmas is not a huge affair in Morocco. That said, the amount of foreigners living in Morocco and visiting the country thanks to tourism efforts means that Christmas has become more significant in recent years. Whilst the country does not come together and feel ‘Christmassy’, there are still people living there who do celebrate it.

If you fancy giving Morocco a visit over the Christmas period then you will find it easy to find accommodation, or better still, to book a package deal specifically for those who want to get away at that time of the year. Many hotels organise special Christmas features within their buildings and celebrate Christmas day.

Don’t be confused if you see many shops in Morocco displaying decorations around this time; it is for the benefit of the humble tourist and to draw in trade. Main streets will not be decorated, however, like in the UK. The exception to this is the city of Marrakech, where the streets are decorated with orange trees, the Moroccan colour of Christmas.

Despite being a minority, there are some Christian Moroccans, and they celebrate Christmas. The Christian churches scattered around the country are open for mass and welcome foreigners to attend, though security will be very strict throughout the Christmas period. Around 100,000 people in Morocco celebrate Christmas properly, many are of French descent and some are recent immigrants. After Islam, Christianity is the second largest religion in Morocco, although the exact number of believers is not known as official statistics do not account for expatriates living in Morocco.

Christmas in Morocco is a public holiday and during this time the Christian community living there wrap gifts for family and friends, have a version of a Christmas tree, and give out Christmas cards much as they do anywhere in Europe. It is seen as a time for friends and family to get together and rejoice. Festive songs are performed and many shops will also play Christmas songs.
